Affirmation of the Week
The seed cannot sprout up
without sending roots
simultaneously into the ground

Health Tips of the Week

  • People diagnosed with diabetes in midlife are more likely to experience significant memory and cognitive problems during the next 20 years than those with healthy blood sugar levels, new Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health research suggests.
  • While doctors almost always agree on a pathological diagnosis of invasive breast cancer, there is room for improvement when diagnosing atypia (or atypical ductal hyperplasia-ADH) and DCIS (ductal carcinoma in-situ). Get a second opinion.
  • Researchers are challenging the intake of vitamin D recommended by the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine saying their Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin D underestimates the need. The doses are only about one-tenth those needed to cut incidence of diseases related to vitamin D deficiency.
  • Just like milk and many other foods, blood used for transfusions is perishable. But contrary to popular belief, new research shows that blood stored for three weeks is just as good as fresh blood, reveal findings published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.
  • Women who watched food television and cooked frequently from scratch had a higher body-mass-index, or BMI – weighing on average 10 more pounds – than those who obtained information from sources like family and friends, magazines and newspapers, or cooking classes. Women who watched food television but didn’t cook from scratch failed to see their viewing habits translate to a higher BMI.
  • Many patients suffering from psoriasis showed significant recovery after just a single dose of an experimental treatment with a human antibody that blocks an immune signaling protein crucial to the disease, researchers report. By the end of the trial, conducted at Rockefeller University and seven other centers, nearly all of the 31 patients to receive treatment saw dramatic, if not complete, improvement in their symptoms.
  • Air pollution has been linked to a dangerous narrowing of neck arteries that occurs prior to strokes, according to researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center.
  • Healthy young adults who don’t consume caffeine regularly experienced greater rise in resting blood pressure after consumption of a commercially available energy drink — compared to a placebo drink — thus raising the concern that energy drinks may increase the risk of cardiac events, Mayo Clinic researchers found.
