Affirmation of the Week
I never get lost because
I don’t know where I’m going

Health Tips of the Week

  • Uncertainty can cause more stress than inevitable pain. Knowing that there is a small chance of getting a painful electric shock can lead to significantly more stress than knowing that you will definitely be shocked.
  • Genes are not destiny in determining whether a person will suffer from depression, reports a new study from Northwestern University. Nurture can override nature. When rats genetically bred for depression received the equivalent of rat “psychotherapy,” their depressed behavior was alleviated. And, after the depressed rats had the therapy, some of their blood biomarkers for depression changed to non-depressed levels.
  • New research suggests that looking at structures in the right side of the brain may help predict who will better recover from language problems after a stroke, according to a study published in Neurology.
  • A University of Guelph professor has uncovered the “secret” to staying strong as we age – superb fitness. Geoff Power found elderly people who were elite athletes in their youth or later in life – and who still compete as masters athletes — have much healthier muscles at the cellular level compared to those of non-athletes.
  • Longer maternity leave linked to better infant health. For each additional month of paid maternity leave offered in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), infant mortality is reduced by 13%, according to a new study by researchers from McGill University and UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.
  • According to doctors at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, medications and treatments long considered safe to treat pregnant women with migraines may not be. Check with your doctor.
  • How well a hospital performs financially is not associated with better clinical outcomes, based on results of a new study from UT Southwestern Medical Center that examined hospital mortality and readmission rates.
  • When evaluating the same black student, white teachers expect significantly less academic success than black teachers, a new study concludes. This is especially true for black boys.
  • More than 40 percent of retired National Football League (NFL) players in a recent study had signs of traumatic brain injury based on sensitive MRI scans called diffusion tensor imaging, according to a study released today that will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology.
  • People with type 2 diabetes are at greater risk of serious liver disease than those without the condition, new research has shown.

How To Apologize Successfully

Many of us feel uncomfortable about apologizing. After all it’s a formal admission of “I screwed up,” which undermines the vulnerable ego. We would prefer blaming the injured party: Too sensitive, a case of projection, irritability, or simply they’re dealing with their “own stuff” which has nothing to do with me. When we feel even more uncomfortable by the emotional fallout as we miss the injured party, we will inevitably apologize. However, many apologies are not accepted because they lack sincerity and an expression of empathy – “I understand how you must have felt…” Fortunately, there is a basic framework for a successful apology.

First, the root of the problem needs to be addressed. People tend to oversimplify their assessment of what motivates people. more
