Health Tips of the Week

  • From the San Diego School of Medicine: Before it becomes cancer, you need to stop it. “The body’s immune system is capable of intercepting pre-malignancies and preventing cancer. It does so countless times every day in all of us. That natural ability is what we want to leverage. Building upon our innate defenses against cancer is the foundation of new immunotherapies, which have shown great promise in a very short time.”
  • In mouse studies, researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have found that progesterone – a female sex hormone contained in most forms of hormone-based birth control – appears to stave off the worst effects of influenza.
  • Incorporating laughter into a physical activity program that is focused on strength, balance and flexibility could improve older adults’ mental health, aerobic endurance and confidence in their ability to exercise, according to a study led by Georgia State University.
  • A recent study from the Glaucoma Research Foundation suggests that a diet that includes plenty of green, leafy vegetables may lower the risk of glaucoma.
  • University of Louisville epidemiologist Kira Taylor, Ph.D., found that women who reported feeling more stressed during their ovulatory window were approximately 40-percent less likely to conceive during that month than other less stressful months.
  • Research from Indiana University published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology has found that structured block-building games improve spatial abilities in children to a greater degree than board games.
  • Researchers from the University of Leuven in Belgium claim that Nitrate supplementation in conjunction with Sprint Interval Training in low oxygen conditions could enhance sport performance a study has found. Nitrate is commonly found in diets rich in leafy green foods, like spinach and is important for the functioning of the human body, especially during exercising. Popeye was right!
  • Findings presented by a Japanese Medical college at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes meeting in Munich, Germany claim that married men – not women- were less likely to suffer from metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and high blood sugar that boost the risk of heart disease and stroke. Married men with type 2 diabetes are less likely to be overweight.

Genes or Environment? Environment Wins

New findings from an international team of researchers who studied and tested the relationship between the obesity gene and weight loss strategies in 10,000 participants claim that environmental factors outweigh genetic profile concerning weight loss. According to the British Medical Journal there is “no link between the obesity gene and the ability to lose weight.” Diet, exercise, and drug based weight loss interventions are equally effective for those with the obesity gene and the rest of the population.

This analysis of a complex problem is a huge victory for humanity. more
