Health Tips of the Week

  • University of Minnesota researchers have found a natural product, called Fisetin, can reduce the level of damaged cells in the body, which can slow the aging process. Fisetin is found naturally in fruits like blueberries, apples, grapes, mangoes and strawberries.
  • Women are more likely than men to participate in crash diets in which body weight decreases rapidly and dramatically. Extreme dieting has short and long term risks with possible damage to the heart, kidneys and circulatory system.
  • Lack of estrogen may play a role in the development of anxiety and memory problems according to a new rodent study. The findings were presented at the American Physiological Society.
  • Drinking an additional 1.5 liters of water daily can reduce recurring bladder infections in premenopausal women by nearly half, a yearlong study of otherwise healthy women with a history of repeated infections has found as found in JAMA.
  • According to research from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School an Ivy League experimental rule that moved the kickoff line from the 35 to the 40 yard line and the touchback line from the 25 to the 20 yard line reduced the average annual concussion rate by more than 68 percent.
  • In a first-of-its-kind study Mount Sinai researchers have shown that color vision problems caused by retinal damage on a cellular level can result from a high dose of sildenafil citrate, an ingredient in some popular erectile-dysfunction medication. The results demonstrate that excessive use of the drug could lead to long-term vision problems including possible irreversible damage.
  • Evidence is mounting that a poor diet plays an important role in the development of age-related macular degeneration a leading cause of blindness in the United States. A large collaboration of researchers from the European Union investigating the connection between genes and lifestyle on the development of AMD has found that people who adhered to a Mediterranean diet cut their risk of late-stage AMD by 41 percent. This research expands on previous studies and suggests that such a diet is beneficial for everyone whether you already have the disease or are at risk of developing it. The new research is published in the Journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
  • Daily caffeine intake can help with creating a higher pain threshold.
  • From the Journal of Clinical Oncology a chemotherapy drug commonly used to treat breast cancer, doxorubicin, alters brain structure and function in mice that express the human APOE4 gene, known to significantly increase risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
  • Long-term exposure to periodontal disease bacteria causes inflammation and degeneration of brain neurons in mice that is similar to the effects of Alzheimer’s disease in humans. Periodontal disease may be an initiator of Alzheimer's.
  • Venting about unfair situations at work may do more harm than good according to a new University of Georgia study
