New Feature - Health Tips of the Week

Here are the latest findings:
  • A high-complex-carbohydrate, high-vegetable-protein diet is associated with low body mass. On the other hand, high-protein diets are associated with higher body weight. Not surprisingly, people who exercise more also tend to be less heavy. This is true even when people consume more calories People who eat the amounts of fruits and vegetables recommended by the American Heart Association tend to be the thinnest.
  • High blood pressure is increasing among children and teenagers—obesity is being blamed. First line of treatment is an increased diet of fruits and vegetables and exercise—eliminating junk food. If that fails, then blood pressure medication needs to be taken.
  • Testing the Alzheimer’s vaccine on monkeys will help speed up the process of creating a vaccine with antibodies to remove amyloid plaques in the brain without the deadly consequence of brain swelling. Previously experimented on were mice, but monkeys would be more effective in developing a vaccine that could translate to humans.
  • Folic acid which was added to flour to prevent birth defects had an unexpected benefit, preventing strokes and heart attacks. Folic acid lowers homocysteine levels which weakens the walls in blood vessels.
  • Depression is an important risk factor for back pain. Disabling back pain is likely to reoccur when a person is depressed. Depression can lead to back pain and back pain can lead to depression. So get up, get active and get busy. Lying around passively might just make it worse!
