Question:
I’m a beginner when it comes to working out and everyone has a theory or tips for me. Some really sound way out there, but one quick one: Can you spot reduce? For example, I do a lot of sit-ups will I burn away the fat on my waistline? Does this work? Help! (Claudia, Howard Beach)

Answer:
That would be great, but technically, you can’t spot reduce! You can lose more fat from one area than another because you have more fat there to start with. You must design your exercise program to do aerobics, weight training and the last leg, a structured diet, to eat nutritious foods and cut out the fats and garbage. Work out daily and eat right - even the toughest fatty problem areas can be beat. Also, for a trim waistline make sure to target your obliques in addition to crunches. Bicycles are still the tried and true method. So, Claudia, get down and get busy and you’ll succeed!
